A BRIEF HISTORY OF MODERN LONDON
Modern London reinvented itself with the "Big Bang" financial deregulation (1986) reinforcing its position as a global financial hub. The massive Docklands redevelopment transformed former industrial areas, while the creation of the Greater London Authority in 2000 brought new governance. London's population rebounded to almost 10 million (around 14-15 million in the Greater London metropolitan area.), with more than 300 languages spoken, making it one of the world's most diverse cities. The successful 2012 Olympic Games spurred regeneration in East London. Despite challenges including terrorist attacks, economic uncertainty following Brexit, and the COVID-19 pandemic, London continues to evolve as a preeminent global city that balances profound history with constant innovation.
